Religion is quite a sensitive topic to openly discuss globally, but Nigerian comedienne Maraji disregarded the repercussions and made quite offensive comments about Islam on social media on Monday.
On a day millions of Muslims around the world are celebrating the Eid al-Adha religious holiday, the internet sensation stepped on toes when she stated categorically that Christianity is the only way to salvation and that all other religions including Islam have no place in the eternal place.
Born Gloria Oloruntobi, Maraji, however, said it was not her intention to upset anyone with her opinion stating that the “truth is quite offensive.”
Shortly after her statement on her Instagram page, social media was thrown into a frenzy as persons who deemed her comments distasteful launched an avalanche of attacks on her.
Amid the backlash, Maraji equally gained support from others who believe she just shared a harmless opinion.
David Uyi Omokaro who leapt to her defence said: “The misconception is that Maraji aired what she believes. When actually she aired what Jesus believes. It wasn’t her opinion. Jesus is the problem. He is offensive.”
Brand executive noted that: “You people don’t understand how offensive this Jesus was. Pharisees will invite him to their party to eat. He will sit there & be eating & be abusing them in their own house. O you vipers” o you foolish men” but he is eating & sitting in their house. Leave Maraji.”
