Athletics Federation wants Divine Oduduru to compete for Nigeria

Nigerian athlete Divine Oduduru is being courted by both USA and Nigeria’s athletics boards ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Oduduru shot to fame when his poor grammar made him a viral sensation on social media about a year ago. He is the reason why the phrase “I never experred it” became popular in Nigeria. He moved to the US after failing to secure support from Nigeria’s Athletics Federation.

Last year, Oduduru together with other athletes made the country proud at the African Senior Athletics Championship in Asaba, but were only given a meagre allowance of N107,000 each.

It was within that period that Oduduru’s father passed.

The 22-year-old rejected the money and after complaining about the unfair treatment, left Nigeria for the US to continue his education and his athletics career. In the US he has become a sensation and is breaking records.

In the states, not only did he clock the world’s fastest 200 metres for 2019, he also ran the 2019 world fastest time in 100 metres.

In an interview he was asked if he would consider representing Nigeria in the near future and his response was not very encouraging.

He said, “Next year will be very important in my school athletics career, and I don’t think I will be available for the national trials in Nigeria.

I think our government should have a rethink on how to reposition athletics. Our government is paying lip service to athletics, and it must change before serious preparation starts for Tokyo 2020 Olympics.”
