A board member of the Federal Capital Territory Football Association has urged the head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr to give some preference to local-based players in his final squad.
Godwin Bamigboye is advocating for more local stars in the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, arguing that they have enjoyed more playing time than the foreign-based players.
Rohr named announced a 25-man provisional squad last two weeks, picking four players from the Nigeria Professional League.
The squad will be whittled down for 23 after a three-week camping in Asaba and Egypt.
Bamigboye explains that a squad dominated by inactive foreign-based players will negatively affect Nigeria’s chances of lifting the trophy in Egypt.
“Many of our players in Europe are average players in their various clubs unlike some of the Nigerian based players.
“I mean many of those European based players are not regulars in their clubs and it may likely affect their performance,” Bamigboye said.
Meanwhile the Eagles have begun residential camping in Asaba. Nigeria is expected to engage Zimbabwe and Senegal in warm up friendly matches.
