A High Court in Lagos has renewed the arrest warrant for former Super Eagles captain Austin Jay Jay Okocha.
The renewal of the warrant comes on the back of a submission by a Lagos State prosecutor, Y. A. Pitan that Okocha has failed to settle the alleged tax debt he owes the state.
Pitan also told the court presided over by Justice Adebayo Akintoye on Tuesday that Okocha has not defrayed the full cost of the debt despite visiting the Lagos Internal Revenue Service office.
Announcing the renewal, the judge stated: “The LIRS informed us that the defendant (Okocha) visited their office. He went there to reconcile accounts but has not settled yet.”
The football legend was also accused of failing to appear in court since the charges were brought against him two years ago.
Neither Okocha nor his lawyers were in court as Akintoye adjourned the case to October 10.
The former PSG star is facing charges of failure to furnish LIRS return of income for tax purposes, and failure to pay income tax.
The acts according to the prosecutor contravene Section 56 (a) and (b) of the Lagos State Revenue Administration Law No. 8 of 2006.
