NPFL Final Day — The five surprise teams of the 2019 season

The purists didn’t expect much from the Olukoya Boys after the mass exodus of their regular players towards the end of last season. MFM head coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu had to rely on his newly recruited players who didn’t have top-flight experience at the beginning of the season.

He also added a few experienced players. It is a miracle that they are still in the running for the playoff spots until the final day of the season. They earned five away points and have stayed in the top three for most of the season before their recent slide.

Abia Warriors – Emmanuel Deutsch’s men’s impressive away performance can’t be ignored. They are in second place on the away points table in both groups with 10 points.

But their poor home record in this campaign meant that they must win on the final day of the season against Kano Pillars to preserve their top-flight status.

El Kanemi Warriors – The Borno Army started the season impressively and even picked away wins against Akwa United and Kwara United. They were close to picking one of the Super Six tickets before their recent struggles. They still have an outside chance to make it though, but however the season might end for them, they should be commended.

FC IfeanyiUbah – Many thought that the Anambra Warriors would be fortunate to survive relegation at the end of the season after a major clear-out of almost all their star players. They decided it was best for them to give youth a chance. With nine away points, they are a draw away from picking up their Super Six ticket with a home fixture. Uche Okagbue’s men have performed beyond expectations.

Heartland – They have secured eight away points to surprise all this season. Heartland will have another season in the NPFL if they are able to beat El Kanemi Warriors on Sunday in Okigwe.
